Crocodile Hindi

It never occurred to us when we left Florida, home to alligators and, of course, Gators, that we'd soon again be surrounded by alligators.  OK, not alligators.  But plenty of crocodiles.

About an hour south of Chennai is an extraordinary crocodile habitat that's home to more than 2,500 reptiles, including hundreds of crocs, an alligator or two, turtles, snakes, lizards.  The Madras Crocodile Bank Trust Centre for Herpetology was started in 1976 to preserve and protect India's dwindling croc population.

It's unassuming when you drive up, more of a side of the road affair -- and the signage is like something out of the 1930s -- but once inside, the breadth and variety of crocodiles and the top-notch presentation are impressive. We saw plenty of the creatures sunning themselves, but there were active ones jawing and even a momma protecting her eggs, which she covered with a big mound of dirt.

India, education and entertainment, what's better on a Saturday afternoon?

Seems like some ad whiz did some serious name
spinning for a big croc farm

Impressive!

What makes a croc not an alligator?  Gross generalization:
Pointy snout and and no overbite

The homemade signs were great...

Enlarge the photo so not to miss the ? over the jockey's head.
Who thinks this stuff up? And the horse sweating...

Ahh, a sign from home.
We love the pictogram of feed options

Mugger, sounds about right

Another great sign.
The guy looking at his watch brings home the point.
