Monhegan Island, Maine

Monhegan is a funky little island off the coast of Maine near Boothbay Harbor. There are maybe 100 folks living year round on the rock, doing some lobstering and braving the harsh, unprotected winters.

Summer brings tourists and seasonal families to the place, a mix of high prep and artists, who come for the car-less, un-organized New England vibe. Roads are more like gravel lanes, bereft of vehicles save for the occasional golf cart or pickup hauling luggage and supplies. Electricity and sewer service is sketchy.

This summer marked 400 years since Captain John Smith showed up.

The view of the harbor.

Typical sights, a gravel lane, New England clapboard and lobstering supplies.

Down by the harbor, fish to catch; fish to sell.

The local bulletin board and the local firehouse.

A generator, hidden inside.

Painters everywhere, inspired by the light, water and, of course, boats.

A stroll on a wrecked vessel.

Showing the colors.
